Upadeshasahasri 18.222

18.222 Shankaracharya

tasmādvākyārthavijñānānnordhvaṃ karmavidhirbhavet | na hi brahmāsmi karteti viruddhe bhavato dhiyau ||

Therefore, after the meaning of the sentence is known, there can be no injunction to action; for the two notions 'I am Brahman' and 'I am a doer' contradict each other.

Freedom from the sense of doership does not mean stopping work or neglecting duties to family and others.

Work still gets done, but the anxious sense 'I alone am doing this, everything rests on me' loosens when you know what you are.

Shankaracharya concludes against the ritualists: the knowledge 'I am Brahman' and the sense 'I am a doer' cannot coexist.
