Upadeshasahasri 18.223

18.223 Shankaracharya

brahmāsmīti hi vidyeyaṃ naiva karteti bādhyate | sakāmo baddha ityevaṃ pramāṇābhāsajātayā ||

For this knowledge 'I am Brahman' is not cancelled by [the notions] 'I am a doer', 'I have desires, I am bound', which spring from a [mere] semblance of a means of knowledge.

Old habits of thinking 'I am stuck, I am small' will keep returning. Their return does not cancel what you have truly understood; they are echoes, not evidence.

Shankaracharya says the knowledge 'I am Brahman' cannot be overturned by the older notions of being a doer and being bound, since those rest on a false semblance of knowledge.
