Upadeshasahasri 18.228

18.228 Shankaracharya

yo hi yasmādviraktaḥ syānnāsau tasmai pravartate | lokatrayādviraktatvānmumukṣuḥ kimitīhate ||

One who is dispassionate toward something does not exert himself for its sake. Being dispassionate toward the three worlds, why would the seeker of liberation strive [for them]?

Renunciation here belongs to the disciplined path of a seeker of liberation; for most people it means inner detachment, not abandoning family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

You stop chasing something not by forcing yourself but by seeing it will not give what you want. When the craving drops, the chase drops with it.

Shankaracharya explains why the seeker of liberation does not chase worldly goals: dispassion removes the motive.
