Upadeshasahasri 18.24

18.24 Shankaracharya

saṃbhāvyo gocare śabdaḥ pratyayo vā na cānyathā | na saṃbhāvyau tadātmatvādahaṃkartustathaiva ca ||

A word or a cognition is possible [only] with regard to something within its range, not otherwise. They are not possible [with regard to the inner Self], since it is their very self; and the same holds for the ego [in so far as it is taken as the Self].

Meaning today and context

You can describe anything you can look at, but not the one who is looking. That is why the deepest 'I' always escapes definition.

Shankaracharya explains why words and ideas cannot directly reach the Self: they work only on objects.
