Upadeshasahasri 18.27

18.27 Shankaracharya

saṃnidhau sarvadā tasya syāttadābho'bhimānakṛt | ātmātmīyaṃ dvayaṃ cātaḥ syādahaṃmamagocaraḥ ||

Because [the Self] is always present near [the intellect], a reflection of it arises there, which creates the sense of 'I'. From this come the two, 'self' and 'what belongs to self', which are the field of 'I' and 'mine'.

Meaning today and context

'I' and 'mine' are borrowed light: the mind shines with awareness that is not its own, and then claims it as a personal self with possessions.

Shankaracharya explains how the sense of 'I' and 'mine' arises: the ever-present Self is reflected in the intellect, and that reflection produces the ego.
