Upadeshasahasri 18.29

18.29 Shankaracharya

ābhāso yatra tatraiva śabdāḥ pratyagdṛśiṃ sthitāḥ | lakṣayeyurna sākṣāttamabhidadhyuḥ kathaṃcana ||

Words, resting where the reflection is, can [only] indicate the inner seer; they can never denote it directly in any way.

Meaning today and context

Teachings are pointers, like a finger pointing at the moon. Take them as directions for looking, not as the thing itself.

Shankaracharya explains how scripture can still speak of the Self: words that apply to its reflection in the mind can point to it indirectly, never name it directly.
