Upadeshasahasri 18.3

18.3 Shankaracharya

nityamuktaḥ sadevāsmītyevaṃ cenna bhavenmatiḥ | kimarthaṃ śrāvayatyevaṃ mātṛvacchrutirādṛtā ||

If the conviction 'I am Being itself, ever free' were not meant to arise, why would the revered scripture, like a mother, make us hear it so?

Meaning today and context

The scripture speaks to you as a mother speaks to a child: to tell you something true about yourself that you have not yet noticed, namely that at your core you are already free.

Shankaracharya opens his argument: the Upanishad teaches 'You are Being' precisely so that the conviction of one's ever-free nature may arise.
