ulmukādau yathāgnyarthāḥ parārthatvānna cāñjasā | mukhādanyo mukhābhāso yathādarśānukārataḥ ||
Just as words meaning 'fire' apply to a firebrand and the like [only] secondarily, because [their burning] belongs to something else, and not directly; [and] just as the reflection of a face is other than the face, since it conforms to the mirror,
Meaning today and context
Something can carry the qualities of another without being it: a burning stick is not fire itself, a reflection is not the face.
Shankaracharya develops the analogy of a face and its reflection in a mirror to explain the relation of the Self, the ego and the 'reflection' of consciousness. Two illustrations: words for 'fire' applied to a burning stick, and a face's reflection that follows the mirror.
