Upadeshasahasri 18.32

18.32 Shankaracharya

ābhāsānmukhamapyevamādarśānanuvartanāt | ahaṃkṛtyātmanirbhāso mukhābhāsavadiṣyate ||

...so too the face is other than the reflection, since it does not follow the mirror. The appearance of the Self in the ego is held to be like the reflection of a face.

Meaning today and context

If the mirror is cracked or dusty, the reflection is distorted, but the face is fine. A troubled mind does not mean the Self is damaged.

Shankaracharya develops the analogy of a face and its reflection in a mirror to explain the relation of the Self, the ego and the 'reflection' of consciousness. He completes the comparison: the Self in the ego is like a face seen in a mirror.
