Upadeshasahasri 18.37

18.37 Shankaracharya

mukhābhāso ya ādarśe dharmo nānyatarasya saḥ | dvayorekasya ceddharmo viyukte'nyatare bhavet ||

The reflection of a face in a mirror is not a property of either one. If it were a property of one of the two, it would remain when the other was taken away.

Meaning today and context

The 'I' that feels and suffers belongs neither to pure awareness nor to the body-mind alone; it appears only where they seem to meet.

Shankaracharya develops the analogy of a face and its reflection in a mirror to explain the relation of the Self, the ego and the 'reflection' of consciousness. He argues that the reflection is not a property of either the face or the mirror.
