Upadeshasahasri 18.43

18.43 Shankaracharya

ātmābhāsāśrayāścaivaṃ mukhābhāsāśrayā yathā | gamyate śāstrayuktibhyāmābhāsāsattvameva ca ||

Thus the substrates of the Self's reflection are like the substrates of a face's reflection; and by scripture and reasoning it is understood that the reflection itself has no reality.

Meaning today and context

The ego is like a reflection: useful and vivid, but not a second self alongside the real one.

Shankaracharya concludes the reflection debate: the substrates of the Self's reflection are like those of a face's reflection, and scripture and reasoning show the reflection itself is not real.
