Upadeshasahasri 18.44

18.44 Shankaracharya

na dṛśeravikāritvādābhāsasyāpyavastutaḥ | nācititvādahaṃkartuḥ kasya saṃsāritā bhavet ||

Not of the seeing [consciousness], since it is changeless; not of the reflection, since it is unreal; not of the ego, since it is non-conscious: so whose could transmigration be?

Meaning today and context

When you look closely for the one who is bound and suffering, you do not find it in pure awareness. This can lighten the heavy sense of being a trapped, suffering self.

Shankaracharya draws the conclusion: none of the three candidates, pure consciousness, the reflection or the ego, can really be the one who transmigrates.
