Some say: 'The Self, the ground in which the Self's reflection appears, is changed by its own cognitions; it is happy and unhappy, it transmigrates, and it is also eternal.'

This is the common view we all live by: the one who feels happy or miserable is the real me. Shankaracharya sets it out fairly before showing why it does not hold.
Shankaracharya states the view of some other interpreters: that the Self in which consciousness is reflected is itself changed by its own cognitions and is the one who is happy, unhappy and transmigrating, while still being eternal. He refutes this in the verses that follow.
