Upadeshasahasri 18.48

18.48 Shankaracharya

ātmābhāsāparijñānādyāthātmyena vimohitāḥ | ahaṃkartāramātmeti manyante te nirāgamāḥ ||

Not understanding the reflection of the Self [in the mind], they are deluded about what truly is, and think the ego, the 'I-maker', is the Self. They have no scripture behind them.

The 'I' that claims credit, takes offence and makes plans is a reflection of awareness in the mind, not awareness itself. Mistaking the two is the root confusion; seeing it loosens the grip of the ego on how you feel about yourself.

Shankaracharya answers the view of verse 47: those who hold it have not understood the reflection of consciousness in the mind, and so take the ego, the 'I-maker', to be the Self.
