Upadeshasahasri 18.49

18.49 Shankaracharya

saṃsāro vastusaṃsteṣāṃ kartṛbhoktṛtvalakṣaṇaḥ | ātmābhāsāśrayājñānātsaṃsarantyavivekataḥ ||

For them transmigration, marked by being a doer and an experiencer, is something real. Not knowing the ground of the Self's reflection, they keep wandering [in birth and death] for lack of discrimination.

Saying suffering comes from lack of discrimination does not mean your pain is imaginary or your fault. Real distress needs care; if you are in crisis, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

When I am sure I am only the one who acts and gets results, every success and loss lands on 'me' and the cycle never ends. Discernment, seeing the witness behind the doer, is what lets one step out of that wheel inwardly.

Continuing against the same view, Shankaracharya says that for those who take the ego as the Self, the round of doing and experiencing becomes something real, and they keep wandering in it because they do not discriminate.
