Upadeshasahasri 18.5

18.5 Shankaracharya

śāstraprāmāṇyato jñeyā dharmāderastitā yathā | viṣāpoho yathā dhyānāddhnutiḥ syātpāpmanastathā ||

Just as the existence of dharma and the like is to be known on the authority of scripture, and just as poison is removed by meditation [on a sacred formula], so [by knowledge from scripture] there is removal of sin.

Meaning today and context

Some things can be known only by being told truly; once understood, the knowing itself changes us, without any further act being needed.

Shankaracharya argues that knowledge from scripture is effective by itself: just as dharma is known only from scripture, and as meditation [on a sacred formula] removes poison, so knowledge removes sin.
