Upadeshasahasri 18.50

18.50 Shankaracharya

caitanyābhāsatā buddherātmanastatsvarūpatā | syāccettaṃ jñānaśabdaiśca vedaḥ śāstīti yujyate ||

If the intellect has [only] the reflection of consciousness and the Self is that [consciousness] by its very nature, then it makes sense that the Veda teaches it with words for knowledge.

Meaning today and context

The mind borrows its light; awareness is what you are. That is why the scriptures can call the Self 'knowledge' without meaning a particular thought or piece of information.

Shankaracharya gives his own position: only if the intellect carries a reflection of consciousness, while the Self is consciousness itself, can the Veda rightly speak of the Self with words for knowing.
