Upadeshasahasri 18.51

18.51 Shankaracharya

प्रकृतिप्रत्ययार्थौ यौ भिन्नावेकाश्रयौ यथा । करोति गच्छतीत्यादौ दृष्टौ लोकप्रसिद्धितः ॥

prakṛtipratyayārthau yau bhinnāvekāśrayau yathā | karoti gacchatītyādau dṛṣṭau lokaprasiddhitaḥ ||

The meanings of the root and of the suffix, though different, have one common bearer, as is seen in 'he does', 'he goes' and the like, from ordinary usage.

धातु का अर्थ और प्रत्यय का अर्थ, भिन्न होते हुए भी, एक ही आश्रय में रहते हैं, जैसे 'करता है', 'जाता है' आदि में लोक-व्यवहार से देखा जाता है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

In everyday speech the one who acts and the action seem to belong together. The next verses ask whether the word 'knows' works the same way.

रोज़ की भाषा में करने वाला और क्रिया एक साथ लगते हैं। अगले श्लोक पूछते हैं कि क्या 'जानता है' शब्द भी ऐसे ही काम करता है।

A grammatical step in the argument: Shankaracharya (or an objector) notes that in ordinary verbs like 'does' and 'goes', the meaning of the verbal root and of the ending belong to one and the same subject.
