Upadeshasahasri 18.53

18.53 Shankaracharya

ātmābhāsastu tiṅvācyo dhātvarthaśca dhiyaḥ kriyā | ubhayaṃ cāvivekena jānātītyucyate mṛṣā ||

The reflection of the Self is what the personal ending denotes, and the meaning of the root is the activity of the intellect. Both, through not being told apart, are called 'knows'; [so the statement] is false.

When we say 'I know', two things are fused: the mind's working, and the light of awareness reflected in it. Seeing them apart shows that awareness itself never labours or tires.

Shankaracharya answers the grammatical objection: in 'knows', the ending refers to the reflection of the Self and the root to the activity of the intellect; joining the two is a confusion.
