Upadeshasahasri 18.54

18.54 Shankaracharya

na buddheravabodho'sti nātmano vidyate kriyā | ato nānyatarasyāpi jānātīti ca yujyate ||

The intellect has no awareness, and the Self has no action; therefore 'knows' does not fit either of them alone.

Meaning today and context

Thinking is a process of the mind; awareness does no work. Knowing yourself as the awareness, not the busy process, brings a quiet that the mind's activity cannot disturb.

Shankaracharya completes the point: the intellect is not aware and the Self does not act, so 'knows' cannot be said strictly of either one.
