Upadeshasahasri 18.55

18.55 Shankaracharya

nāpyato bhāvaśabdena jñaptirityapi yujyate | na hyātmā vikriyāmātro nitya ātmetiśāsanāt ||

For the same reason it is not right either to call [the Self] 'knowing' with a word for an event, for the Self is not mere change, since scripture teaches, 'the Self is eternal'.

Meaning today and context

Moments of knowing come and go; what you are does not. You are not a passing experience but what is present through all of them.

Shankaracharya rules out another way of speaking: calling the Self 'knowing' as an action-noun, since scripture says the Self is eternal and cannot be mere change.
