na buddherbuddhivācyatvaṃ karaṇaṃ na hyakartṛkam | nāpi jñāyata ityevaṃ karmaśabdairnirucyate ||
The intellect is not [really] what the word 'understanding' means; [and the Self is not] an instrument, for an instrument does not exist without an agent. Nor is [the Self] described by words for an object, such as 'it is known'.

You can never catch yourself as an object, the way you know a chair or a thought. That is not a failure of practice; it is because you are the one to whom every object appears.
Shankaracharya continues to rule out ways in which words could denote the Self: it is not the instrument of knowing, nor something known as an object.
