Upadeshasahasri 18.57

18.57 Shankaracharya

na yeṣāmeka evātmā nirduḥkho'vikriyaḥ sadā | teṣāṃ syācchabdavācyatvaṃ jñeyatvaṃ cātmanaḥ sadā ||

For those who do not hold that the Self is one alone, free from sorrow and ever changeless, the Self could always be denoted by words and be an object of knowledge.

If the Self were just another changing thing, it could be described like anything else. The teaching that it is one, untouched by sorrow and unchanging, is exactly why no description reaches it.

Shankaracharya says the difficulty arises only on his view; for schools that do not hold the Self to be one, sorrowless and changeless, the Self could be named by words and known as an object.
