yadāhaṃkarturātmatvaṃ tadā śabdārthamukhyatā | nāśanāyādimattvāttu śrutau tasyātmateṣyate ||
If the ego were the Self, then the words would apply in their primary sense. But because it has hunger and the like, scripture does not accept it as the Self.
Saying hunger belongs to the ego, not the Self, is not advice to ignore the body's needs, skip meals or fast. Eat and care for your body; if you struggle with food, seek help (Tele-MANAS 14416).
Meaning today and context
Hunger, thirst, tiredness and need belong to the body-mind and the ego built on it. They are real and must be looked after, but they are not the last word on who you are.
Shankaracharya concedes that words like 'knows' would apply literally if the ego were the Self, but scripture denies this, because the ego has hunger and thirst while the Self is beyond them.
