Upadeshasahasri 18.62

18.62 Shankaracharya

abhiyuktaprasiddhiścetpūrvavaddurvivekatā | gatiśūnyaṃ na vedo'yaṃ pramāṇaṃ saṃvadatyuta ||

If [it is] the usage of the learned, discrimination is as hard as before. [Objector:] 'Then is this Veda, with no way [to convey its sense], not a means of knowledge? Or does it agree [with usage after all]?'

Even learned habits of speech blur the knower and the known. The way out, as the next verse shows, is an everyday example everyone understands.

Shankaracharya continues: the usage of learned people is no better, since they too fail to discriminate. The objector asks whether the Veda, then, would have no way to convey its meaning and so fail as a source of knowledge.
