Upadeshasahasri 18.63

18.63 Shankaracharya

ādarśamukhasāmānyaṃ mukhasyeṣṭaṃ hi mānavaiḥ | mukhasya pratibimbo hi mukhākāreṇa dṛśyate ||

For people take the likeness of the face in a mirror to be [their own] face, since the reflection of the face is seen in the form of the face.

We say 'that's me' to a reflection without a second thought. In the same way we call the mind's reflected awareness 'me', and that simple habit explains how words like 'I know' arise.

Shankaracharya's answer begins with the mirror example: people naturally take the face in the mirror to be their face, because the reflection appears in the shape of the face.
