Upadeshasahasri 18.65

18.65 Shankaracharya

buddheḥ kartṛtvamadhyasya jānātīti jña ucyate | tathā caitanyamadhyasya jñatvaṃ buddherihocyate ||

Superimposing the intellect's agency [on the Self], the knower is said to 'know'; and likewise, superimposing consciousness [on the intellect], the intellect is here called a knower.

The mistake runs both ways: we lend the mind's busyness to awareness, and awareness's light to the mind. Untangling this is the practical heart of self-knowledge.

Shankaracharya explains the two-way superimposition behind the word 'knows'.
