Upadeshasahasri 18.66

18.66 Shankaracharya

svarūpaṃ cātmano jñānaṃ nityaṃ jyotiḥ śruteryataḥ | na buddhyā kriyate tasmānnātmanānyena vā sadā ||

Knowledge is the very nature of the Self, an eternal light, as scripture says. So it is never produced by the intellect, nor by the Self, nor by anything else.

Meaning today and context

Thoughts and information are produced and lost, but the light in which they appear is not made by anything. You do not have to earn or create that awareness; you are it, even on days when the mind is dark.

Shankaracharya states his conclusion: knowledge, in the sense of pure awareness, is the Self's own nature, an eternal light according to scripture, and is never produced by anything.
