Upadeshasahasri 18.7

18.7 Shankaracharya

sadasmīti pramāṇotthā dhīranyā tannibhodbhavā | pratyakṣādinibhā vāpi bādhyate digbhramādivat ||

The understanding 'I am Being' arises from a valid means of knowledge; the other [notion, 'I am an agent'] arises from what merely resembles one, or resembles perception and the like, and it is overturned, like confusion about the directions.

A belief can feel as obvious as seeing, and still be a mistake, like being sure east is west in a strange city. What feels self-evident about who we are can be corrected.

Shankaracharya argues that the knowledge 'I am Being' comes from a valid source (scripture), while the opposite notion only looks like valid knowledge and is overturned, like being confused about directions.
