ādarśānuvidhāyitvaṃ chāyāyā asyate mukhe | buddhidharmānukāritvaṃ jñābhāsasya tatheṣyate ||
That the reflection follows the mirror is denied of the face; in the same way, the knower's reflection is held to follow the properties of the intellect.
Meaning today and context
A cracked or dusty mirror distorts the reflection but does nothing to the face. A troubled mind colours how 'I' seems, but leaves the awareness behind it untouched.
Shankaracharya applies the mirror example again: the reflection's conforming to the mirror is not attributed to the face, and likewise the knower's reflection follows the qualities of the intellect, not of the knower.
