Upadeshasahasri 18.71

18.71 Shankaracharya

buddhestu pratyayāstasmādātmābhāsena dīpitāḥ | grāhakā iva bhāsante dahantīvolmukādayaḥ ||

So the intellect's cognitions, lit up by the reflection of the Self, shine as if they were perceivers, just as firebrands and the like seem to burn.

Meaning today and context

Thoughts like 'I'm a failure' or 'I know what will happen' feel like the one who sees, but they are seen. Their power to grip you is borrowed from the awareness you are.

Shankaracharya concludes that the mind's cognitions, lit by the reflection of the Self, only appear to be perceivers, just as a firebrand appears to burn though it is the fire in it that burns.
