Upadeshasahasri 18.75

18.75 Shankaracharya

adhyakṣasya samīpe tu siddhiḥ syāditi cenmatam | nādhyakṣe'nupakāritvādanyatrāpi prasaṅgataḥ ||

If you think they become established in the presence of an overseer, no: [they do] nothing for the overseer, and [the same] would follow for other things too.

Meaning today and context

Mere nearness to a witness does not explain knowing. Shankaracharya will argue that the mind actually carries a reflection of awareness.

Shankaracharya rejects the suggestion that cognitions become known merely by being near an inactive overseer: such an overseer gains nothing from them, and the same would hold for anything near it.
