The one who listens, who seeks [freedom] and is in pain: is he the overseer, or the other? You do not hold that the overseer is in pain or seeks anything.

The person who comes to a teacher is the one who hurts and wants freedom. Any teaching that ignores that person, and speaks only of a far-off witness, cannot help.
Shankaracharya asks the opponent who holds the Self to be a mere detached overseer: who then is the student who listens to the teaching, seeking freedom and suffering? Not the overseer, on your view.
