Upadeshasahasri 18.8

18.8 Shankaracharya

kartā bhokteti yacchāstraṃ lokabuddhyanuvādi tat | sadasmīti śruterjātā bādhyate'nyaitayaiva dhīḥ ||

The scripture that speaks of [the self as] agent and enjoyer merely restates the common understanding of the world; that other notion is overturned by this very understanding 'I am Being', born of scripture.

Meaning today and context

Scripture meets us where we are, speaking our everyday language of doing and getting, but its final word points beyond it.

Shankaracharya answers the objection that scripture itself speaks of an agent and enjoyer: such passages only repeat ordinary understanding, which is overturned by 'I am Being'.
