Upadeshasahasri 18.80

18.80 Shankaracharya

saṃbandho vācya evātra yena tvamiti lakṣayet | draṣṭṛdṛśyatvasaṃbandho yadyadhyakṣe'kriye katham ||

A relation must be stated here by which [scripture] could point out [the overseer] as 'you'. If it is the relation of seer and seen, how [can that be] in an overseer who does not act?

Meaning today and context

Thinking of the Self as a watcher who looks at the mind still makes it a doer. Shankaracharya pushes toward a subtler view: the mind shines with the Self's reflection.

Shankaracharya presses the opponent to name the relation between the 'I' and the overseer; the relation of seer and seen cannot apply to an overseer that does nothing.
