Upadeshasahasri 18.87

18.87 Shankaracharya

tathaiva cetanābhāsaṃ cittaṃ caitanyavadbhavet | mukhābhāso yathādarśa ābhāsaścodito mṛṣā ||

Just so the mind, carrying the reflection of consciousness, would seem like consciousness; but, like the face's reflection in a mirror, the reflection is declared false.

Meaning today and context

The mind can feel like the whole of who you are because it shines with your awareness. Its stories about you are reflections, not the face.

Shankaracharya applies the point: the mind with the reflection of consciousness seems conscious, but, like the face in the mirror, the reflection is declared unreal.
