If you say, 'Let that be so too', no, for that agrees with the materialists. And if there were no reflection in the mind, the intellect would not [have the thought] 'I am seeing [itself]'.
Meaning today and context
Self-knowledge happens in the mind: the mind, lit by awareness, comes to recognise 'I am that awareness'. That is why a clear, steady mind matters on this path.
Shankaracharya rejects accepting that the body and senses are conscious, since that is the materialists' (Lokāyata) position, and adds that without the reflection in the mind the thought 'I am pure seeing' could never arise.
