Upadeshasahasri 18.9

18.9 Shankaracharya

sadeva tvamasītyukte nātmano muktatāṃ sthirām | prapadyate prasaṃcakṣāmato yuktyānucintayet ||

[Opponent:] When told 'You are Being itself', one does not attain a steady [sense of] the Self's freedom; therefore one should reflect on it by reasoning in repeated meditation.

Meaning today and context

Many people feel this: they have heard the teaching that they are whole, but it does not hold when life gets hard. Shankaracharya takes the objection seriously before answering it.

An opponent who holds that hearing 'Thou art That' is not enough and that repeated meditation (prasaṃkhyāna) on it is required begins his case: hearing the sentence once does not give a steady sense of freedom.
