Upadeshasahasri 18.91

18.91 Shankaracharya

mamedaṃpratyayau jñeyau yuṣmadyeva na saṃśayaḥ | ahamityasmadīṣṭaḥ syādayamasmīti cobhayoḥ ||

The notions 'mine' and 'this' are to be known as belonging only to the 'you' side [the object]; there is no doubt. 'I' is held to belong to the 'I' side [the subject]; and 'I am this' [involves] both.

My job, my body, my reputation, this feeling: all of these are seen, so none is the seer. Pain begins when 'I' gets glued to 'this', as in 'I am this failure' or 'I am this illness'; noticing the glue is the first step to freedom.

Shankaracharya spells out the distinction of verse 90: the notions 'mine' and 'this' belong to the side of the object ('you'), 'I' to the subject, and 'I am this' mixes the two.
