mamedaṃ dvayamapyetanmadhyamasya viśeṣaṇam | dhanī gomānyathā tadvaddeho'haṃkartureva ca ||
Both of these, 'mine' and 'this', are qualifiers of the middle one [the ego]. Just as [a man is called] 'wealthy' or 'owner of cows', so the body too [is a qualifier] of the ego, the doer.
Meaning today and context
Your body, your possessions and your roles are attached to the 'I' the way wealth is attached to a rich man: they describe the ego, they are not the Self. Losing or gaining them changes the description, not who you are.
Shankaracharya continues analysing the words 'I', 'mine' and 'this' in order to show what 'thou' in 'Thou art That' really points to. Here he places 'mine' and 'this' as attributes of the ego, the middle term between the pure Self and objects.
