Upadeshasahasri 18.94

18.94 Shankaracharya

buddhyārūḍhaṃ sadā sarvaṃ sāhaṃkartrā ca sākṣiṇaḥ | tasmātsarvāvabhāso jñaḥ kiṃcidapyaspṛśansadā ||

Everything, together with the ego, is always mounted on the intellect [and lies before] the witness. Therefore the knower illumines everything, while never touching anything at all.

Meaning today and context

Every thought, mood and self-image, even the sense of 'I did this', shows up in the mind before an awareness that is not stained by any of it. You can see your anger or shame without being made of it.

Having placed body and possessions under the ego, Shankaracharya concludes that everything, the ego included, appears in the intellect before the witness, which lights it all without being touched.
