Upadeshasahasri 18.95

18.95 Shankaracharya

pratilomamidaṃ sarvaṃ yathoktaṃ lokabuddhitaḥ | avivekadhiyāmasti nāsti sarvaṃ vivekinām ||

All this, as explained, runs counter to the common understanding of the world. For those whose minds do not discriminate, everything exists; for those who discriminate, none of it exists.

'None of it exists' is about what defines the Self, not a reason to treat people, duties, health or money as unreal or unimportant.

Meaning today and context

What feels most solid, 'I am this body, this name, these possessions', is exactly what careful reflection loosens. The world does not vanish; its claim to define you does.

Shankaracharya notes that this analysis runs against ordinary understanding: what the undiscriminating take as real and self-evident, the discriminating see as having no existence of its own.
