Upadeshasahasri 18.96

18.96 Shankaracharya

anvayavyatirekau hi padārthasya padasya ca | syādetadahamityatra yuktirevāvadhāraṇe ||

Agreement and difference [apply] to the meaning of a word and to the word itself. In the case of 'I', reasoning [by them] alone serves to determine [what it means].

Meaning today and context

To find out who you are, notice what stays present through every change of body, mood and circumstance, and what comes and goes. What never leaves is a better candidate for 'I' than what keeps changing.

Shankaracharya names his method: the meaning of a word is fixed by agreement and difference (anvaya-vyatireka), noting what stays when other things change. For the word 'I', only such reasoning can settle what it truly refers to.
