Upadeshasahasri 18.97

18.97 Shankaracharya

nādrākṣamahamityasminsuṣupte'nyanmanāgapi | na vārayati dṛṣṭiṃ svāṃ pratyayaṃ tu niṣedhati ||

In deep sleep, [when one later says] 'I saw nothing else at all', one does not deny one's own seeing; one denies only the [presence of a] mental notion.

Meaning today and context

Even when the mind is completely blank, as in dreamless sleep, awareness has not gone anywhere; only thoughts were absent. You are not your thoughts: they can stop and you remain.

Applying agreement and difference, Shankaracharya turns to deep sleep: on waking one says 'I saw nothing', which denies the presence of thoughts but not of the seeing awareness itself.
