evaṃ vijñātavākyārthe śrutilokaprasiddhitaḥ | śrutistattvamasītyāha śroturmohāpanuttaye ||
When the meaning of the sentence has been understood in this way, from what is established by scripture and by common experience, scripture says 'Thou art That' to dispel the hearer's delusion.
Meaning today and context
'Thou art That' is not information added to you but the removal of a mistake about you. When you stop taking the changing body and mind as yourself, what is left is already whole.
With 'I' analysed, Shankaracharya says the great saying 'Thou art That' (Chandogya Upanishad 6.8.7) can now do its work: it is spoken to remove the hearer's delusion.
