Upadeshasahasri 19.1

19.1 Shankaracharya

prayujya tṛṣṇājvaranāśakāraṇaṃ cikitsitaṃ jñānavirāgabheṣajam | na yāti kāmajvarasannipātajāṃ śarīramālāśatayogaduḥkhitām ||

One who has taken the treatment that destroys the fever of craving, the medicine of knowledge and dispassion, no longer falls into the state born of the full-blown fever of desire, tormented by being joined to hundreds of strings of bodies [birth after birth].

Meaning today and context

Craving is treated here like a fever: it can be cured, and the cure is understanding plus a loosening of attachment, not more getting. When wanting keeps you restless, the medicine is to see clearly what you already are.

Shankaracharya opens the last chapter, a dialogue between the Self and the mind, in his own voice: knowledge and dispassion are named as the medicine for the fever of craving.
