Upadeshasahasri 19.16

19.16 Shankaracharya

asatsamaṃ caiva sadityapīti cedanarthavattvātkharaśṛṅgatulyataḥ | anarthavattvaṃ tvasati hyakāraṇaṃ na caiva tasmānna viparyaye'nyathā ||

If you say the real too is the same as the unreal, because it serves no purpose, like a donkey's horn: [no]. Purposelessness in the unreal comes from its having no cause [to exist]; that is not so [for the real]. So in the reverse case it is not otherwise.

A technical rebuttal: the fact that the Self is not 'useful' like an object does not make it as unreal as a donkey's horn.

The Self answers an objection that the real is no better than the unreal, since both serve no purpose, like a donkey's horn.
