Upadeshasahasri 2.4

2.4 Shankaracharya

idaṃvanamatikramya śokamohādidūṣitam | vanādgāndhārako yadvatsvamātmānaṃ prapadyate ||

Just as the man of Gandhara got out of the forest and reached his own home, so [the seeker], crossing beyond this forest of 'this', polluted with grief, delusion and the rest, reaches his own Self.

When someone is grieving, acknowledge the loss first; this verse does not dismiss mourning. If grief feels unbearable, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Grief and confusion feel like being lost in a forest of things that seem to be you. The way home is not a far journey but a return to what you already are.

Shankaracharya closes the chapter with the parable from the Chandogya Upanishad (6.14) of a man from Gandhara, led blindfold into a forest and finding his way home.
