Just as the sage Udanka did not accept the nectar because he suspected it was urine, so people do not accept the knowledge of the Self out of fear that their rites will be destroyed.

We sometimes push away exactly what would free us because it looks unfamiliar, or because it threatens a routine we have built our identity on.
Chapter 5, on the mind and its impressions. Shankaracharya compares people who refuse Self-knowledge for fear of losing their rites to the sage Udanka, who refused nectar (offered by Indra in disguise) because he suspected it was urine.
