Upadeshasahasri 5.3

5.3 Shankaracharya

nausthasya prātilomyena nagānāṃ gamanaṃ yathā | ātmanaḥ saṃsṛtistadvaddhyāyatīveti hi śrutiḥ ||

As mountains seem to move in the opposite direction to one sitting in a boat, so is the Self's transmigration; for śruti says, 'it thinks, as it were'.

Meaning today and context

The 'as it were' matters: worry, wandering and change only seem to belong to you. Seeing this does not stop the boat, but you stop mistaking yourself for the scenery.

Shankaracharya repeats the boat image and cites the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (4.3.7), 'it thinks, as it were', as scriptural support.
